Thunderhead, Neil Shusterman

Thank you Walker Books for Thunderhead in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

Rowan and Citra take opposite stances on the morality of the Scythedom, putting them at odds, in the second novel of the chilling New York Times bestselling series from Neal Shusterman, author of the Unwind dystology. Rowan has gone rogue, and has taken it upon himself to put the Scythedom through a trial by fire. Literally. In the year since Winter Conclave, he has gone off-grid, and has been striking out against corrupt scythes—not only in MidMerica, but across the entire continent. He is a dark folk hero now—“Scythe Lucifer”—a vigilante taking down corrupt scythes in flames. Citra, now a junior scythe under Scythe Curie, sees the corruption and wants to help change it from the inside out, but is thwarted at every turn, and threatened by the “new order” scythes. Realizing she cannot do this alone—or even with the help of Scythe Curie and Faraday, she does the unthinkable, and risks being “deadish” so she can communicate with the Thunderhead—the only being on earth wise enough to solve the dire problems of a perfect world. But will it help solve those problems, or simply watch as perfection goes into decline?

Review:

This was one of my most anticipated reads for the year and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. More friends. More fear. More enemies. More everything! This book was brilliant start to finish and I cannot believe I have to wait until 2019 to read the third instalment of this book. I may just have to sit in a corner and rock back and forth until then.

Flowing smoothly from Scythe this book davuls a little more into the Thunderhead and the Scythedom and how the two organisations co-exist together, which not only raises more questions but answers question that were left open in Scythe. Thunderhead also gives introduces you to how Sythedom should be constructed and how it co-exist with the Thunderhead. Then there is the Thunderhead, which is pretty much like the Apple cloud that collects human knowledge, crimes that have been committed, unhappiness as well as disease and well everyday human interactions and feelings. The only thing not under the control of the Thunderhead is the Scythedom.

You also get introduced to a new character Grayson and experience life from his POV. You get to know his love for the Thunderhead and how he has grown to rely on it in his every day to day life. Though I didn’t find him as interesting of Citra and Rowan (they are a hard act to follow) but his chapters were well written and still captivating, as you watch his risk his loyalty to the Thunderhead to do what is right.

And Citra and Rowan… they are still as amazing as they were in book one. Only in this book you see them grow, evolve and wise up. You get to see Rowan on his mastermind hunt under the alias Scythe Lucifer and kill Scythes that don’t play by the rules and you actually feel as though you are on the run from the Scythdom as well. Citra, is such a bold, wonderful and caring character. Literally. The people that she chooses to kill are killed with compassion. Her victims get the chance to decide how the want to die at the end of a 30 day period. That’s right she actually lets them say their goodbyes to their loved ones and get their affairs in order, instead of killing and dashing she puts a lot of thought into her victims, even if it is at the disapproval of the Scythedom.
Now the ending of this book literally broke me in two. What? How? Gahhh I need the third book now!! That cliff-hanger was brilliant! It will be interesting to see what these three amazing and insightful characters get up to. Overall this book was incredible and kept up the pace of the first book. I highly recommend you get this series if you already haven’t. It honestly surprises me that this series isn’t on Instagram more often. It is brilliant, unique and a complete page-turner. But fair warning this is one of those books that you want to read in one sitting so clear you schedule.
