Thank you Penguin Books for this book in Exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Emma Nolan wants only one thing before she graduates: to dance with her girlfriend at the senior prom. But in her small town of Edgewater, Indiana, that’s like asking for the moon.

Alyssa Greene is her high school’s “it” girl: popular, head of the student council, and daughter of the PTA president. She also has a secret. She’s been dating Emma for the last year and a half.

When word gets out that Emma plans to bring a girl as her date, it stirs a community-wide uproar that spirals out of control. Now, the PTA, led by Alyssa’s mother, is threatening to cancel the prom altogether.

Enter Barry Glickman and Dee Dee Allen, two Broadway has-beens who see Emma’s story as the perfect opportunity to restore their place in the limelight. But when they arrive in Indiana to fight on Emma’s behalf, their good intentions go quickly south.

Between Emma facing the fray head-on, Alyssa wavering about coming out, and Barry and Dee Dee basking in all the attention, it’s the perfect prom storm. Only when this unlikely group comes together do they realize that love is always worth fighting for.

Review:

I didn’t know that this was based off a Broadway musical but they did an amazing job going from screen to bound paper and still have a captivating story.

The main two things that need to be discussed about this book is homophobia and love.

Humans seem to think that their opinions and thoughts are the only thing that matters, no matter how it affects other people nor other people’s feelings. I honestly don’t understand how people think this way and it proves nothing more than they are shallow and ignorant. These feelings and thoughts, of course, get amplified by the fact religion gets involved. Because every single culture has their own opinion about who the true creator is and what their ‘god’ says goes. This is why I personally hate religion and get frustrated when those close their mind to the world and focus on a ‘god’ instead of the humans that on this earth and respecting them as well.

I had to get that out at the start of this book review as my lack of belief and open mind does come in play with the review of this book.

Again, this book shares a powerful message about love and those that are against love.

Love is love, no matter your gender, race, and religion or if you believe that the earth is flat or not. Every single human deserves a chance at love, regardless of anyone’s mindless homophobia thoughts.

The Prom focuses on two young girls, who want nothing more than to be together and go to prom with each other. Emma and Alyssa are two teenagers in love and want nothing more than to live life openly and together.

Emma is a strong willed character, which would fight for her beliefs and for her heart. Alyssa comes from a strict up bringing with an over baring mother that wants nothing more than to ensure Alyssa follows the bible and all its stupid rules.

Now let’s amplify this and get the whole bible bashing town involved on these two young teenagers and their love and their one wish to go to prom together.

I really enjoyed this book. It highlights two important topics in a human’s life and hopefully opens the eyes of those who are blind to life outside of their religion.

This is a must read. I cannot stress this more. It was beautiful, true to situations that are happening in the world and focus on what is important, human freedom and love.
