Bad Habits, Flynn Meaney

Thank you Penguin Teen Australia for this book in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

Alex is a rebel from the tip of her purple fauxhawk to the toes of her biker boots. She’s tried everything she can think of to get expelled from her strict Catholic boarding school. Nothing has worked so far – but now, Alex has a new plan.

Tired of the sexism she sees in every corner of St Mary’s, Alex decides to stage the school’s first ever production of The Vagina Monologues. Which is going to be a challenge, as no one else at St Mary’s can even bear to say the word ‘vagina’ out loud . .

Review:

Bad Habits is one of those books that leaves you feeling empowered once you finish, which you don’t usually find any more, because contemporary stories are just seemed to be based around that instant love.

This important story is about feminism in a Catholic Boarding School, where Alex, my favourite kind of rebel tries to organise the stage play, ‘The Vagina Monologues’ However this religious school is petrified of the word, a word of a female body part. Its hilarious.

What I actually enjoyed the most is that Alex seems extremely overbearing with her feminist claims, but her friends bring her back down to reality and there isn’t any female bashing for them having different plans for their future. I love this! There are so many ‘feminists’ that should be branded ‘man- haters’ in real life since they loose sight of what the aim is. And you also find adult ‘feminists’ that brand woman’s choices of working or not working with children extremely negative, when woman should ALWAYS encourage woman!

Adult issues or discussions having a plot line around them and turned into a book for the younger generation. I’m all for this!!!

Brilliant book!!!
