Synopsis:
For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home—all because her mother believes that monsters are hunting them. Now these delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. The only saving grace is her best friend, Olivia, who’s coming with them for the summer.
But when Gwen and Olivia are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and taken to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey, Gwen realizes her mom might have been sane all along.
The world Gwen finds herself in is called Neverland, yet it’s nothing like the stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through her fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the roguish young pirate who promises to keep her safe.
With time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But will she be able to save Neverland without losing herself?
Review:
Peter Pan is life and don’t let the non-believes tell you otherwise.
I absolutely adored Unhooked. I mean it is not only one of my top picks for 2018 so far but it is probably one of the best retellings of my favourite story Peter Pan. This book has everything from a unique storyline, fantastic characters (not to mention that Hook is now my official book boyfriend) but the way the words flowed on the pages.. Gahhh sooo much love for this book! If I ever get the chance to meet Lisa Maxwell I might just have to get down on my hands and my knees and kiss her boots.
Anyway let’s stop talking about how much I loved the book and move into the reason why you will love this book too!
The plot was creative, there is no doubt about that. This is based before Wendy meets Pan and focuses on Hook rescuing Gwen. Swoon! Gwen gets kidnapped and brought to Neverland where Hook literally rescues her with his Irish accent, toned body and devious grin and all. See what I mean when I said Hook is my new book boyfriend. I mean at this stage of my life I have no idea who Rhysand even is! Gwen must try and figure out who to trust between the notoriously evil Hook and the young prankster Pan in an effort to find her way back home. This book really does break down what you know of Peter Pan, it crosses the line of good and evil and leaves you sitting on your bedroom floor holding your heart in your hands. After all Pan is only just a prankster right?
Another element of this book I loved is the fairies, who are actually dangerously deceiving and only want to preserve themselves and will stop at nothing. Again another barrier breakdown, gone are the days with cute fairies that help you find your missing shoe.
Here is a warning though not all of your favourite characters live. This is a small PG version of Game of Thrones where you find a character who you like and buy a BFF necklace for and next minutes they have been speared and their head is on a pike. Two characters in this that I grew to love died, hence the whole heart in your hand statement I mentioned before.
Keep in mind though this does take a while to get into the story, but there is a reason to the build-up, so before Gwen hits Neverland, read, observe and take those few pages in because it will make the end of this book so much better.
Usually I have a paragraph where I talk about what else I believe the book needed or what let me down or who I want to thank for ruining the book for me but I think this is the first book in a long time where none of that happened. I LOVED IT ALL!!
Please buy this book. Please bow down to the Queen Lisa Maxwell. Please Lisa Maxwell write another book because I crave more and I need more.
