Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda

Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before h’ s pushed out without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

Review: I won this book in a giveaway and before I received it, I had no intention of reading it. I generally find YA contemporary to be a bit of a snooze. Or maybe I just had never read the right kind of YA contemporary? Usually books based in high school never really stand a chance against my high expectations. But what Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda did, was break down my walls.

This book is a heart wrenching but yet I found myself entertained from start to finish and even found myself laughing out loud at some of the brilliant one liners. The banter between Simon and his friends is delightful and reminds you about the fun times you personally had at school, no matter how many few memories that is. It can also remind you of how horrible school is as well, the pressure, the bullies and how uncomfortable it can leave you. Albertalli also pinpoints how real it is for the LGBTQ dealing with homophobia pricks in school, without steering you away from friendship, family and of course finding love in the oddest places.

What I actually loved most about this story is the fact the main character, Simon is supported by those he loves. It isn’t too often that books portray the gay main lead with a support system and family and friends to rely on and this is refreshing.

And let’s continue to talk about the humour in this book! I cannot tell you enough how delightfully hilarious this book is. This is the type of book that wraps you up in a blanket, keeps you warm, and will love you forever.

Praise to Albertalli, I cannot wait to see what other wonderful works you produce!!
