The Stranger of Antics, Leone Purdy

Thank you Sid Harta for this book in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

It’s exciting to fight battles, to rescue damsels in distress, and to make important decisions. But children grow up fast as well.

From the first page of The Strangest Of Antics onwards is a mixture of humour, excitement, sadness and total imagination. From a cat being stolen, to a broken-hearted cricket bat who feels there is nothing more to life, to a pimple that refuses to go away. Other poems deal with hard battles like self-esteem issues.

The book is suitable for pre-teenagers or anyone who loves animals, forests and bewitching tales. Read these poems aloud to hear the intensity and yearnings of its inhabitants – of wishes that can sometimes come true.

Review:

I always like to start my poetry review by saying that by no means and I an expert on poetry. I do enjoy poetry but I always find it hard to write a review overall, but saying that, this is what I thought.

It took a while for me to find a flow with The Strangest of Anticts, I brought that down to the fact that this was a miscellaneous poem collection rather than poems based around similar things or events. Though there were some bright and wonderful poems there were a few that I wasn’t a fan off. I found poems such as Ungainly Pimple a bit on the dull side compared to the others.

I was glad that the author had a wide variety of style in which she wrote. There were poems that were short and sweet, while others packed a lot more meaning, some rhythmed while others didn’t and this was a great way to keep the reader engrossed. I should say that Leone had great use of descriptive words.

“I mused, ‘Is this judgement day?’”

Overall I enjoyed some of the poems but unfortunately not all of them and I found the range of poems a little too inconsistent for my liking. However, if fun and odd poems are your thing, than I encourage you to pick this up.
