Review:
I saw the trailer to the movie before I heard about the book and I am so glad that I picked up the book first before seeing the movie, because the book was delightful.
This book is focused around Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan who is sent to live with his uncle Jonathan and his odd house where the walls tick. You can hear the clocking ticking from every part of the house, behind every wall. Upon arrival, Lewis is introduced to Florence Zimmermann, the neighbour and Jonathan’s dear friend.
I loved the relationship between Mrs Zimmermann and Jonathan, it wasn’t only hilarious but they had so much sass for one another, in a kooky fun way. They kind of had a friendship like an old married couple, they care for one another but spend most of their time bickering.
My heart pained for Lewis, the poor little fat kid that was no good at sport and no one wanted to be around. Why can’t he just be loved? Lewis was not only bright, daring, brave and extremely in tune to the happenings around him. After all not all heroes wear capes.
Without spoiling anything, I loved the cemetery scene! It would have to be my favourite part of the book, creepy, eerie and oh so delightful.
The writing was cute, adorable and easily captivating. Though this book has some dark and creepy elements to it, I hope that the younger generation still grow to love this book and it is one that last through the ages.
The only thing that I wasn’t a fan on was the ending, it seemed like a massive hype for nothing really. There was no big battle, just a gigantic build up for a page of a conclusion, which really wasn’t enough for me. Other than that, I loved this creepy little book to death.
