Synopsis:
Cassidy Blake’s parents are The Inspectres, a (somewhat inept) ghost-hunting team. But Cass herself can REALLY see ghosts. In fact, her best friend, Jacob, just happens to be one.
When The Inspectres head to ultra-haunted Edinburgh, Scotland, for their new TV show, Cass—and Jacob—come along. In Scotland, Cass is surrounded by ghosts, not all of them friendly. Then she meets Lara, a girl who can also see the dead. But Lara tells Cassidy that as an In-betweener, their job is to send ghosts permanently beyond the Veil. Cass isn’t sure about her new mission, but she does know the sinister Red Raven haunting the city doesn’t belong in her world. Cassidy’s powers will draw her into an epic fight that stretches through the worlds of the living and the dead, in order to save herself.
Review:
Victoria Schwab has done it again.
City of Ghosts is a fantastically bright story brimmed with friendship, adventure and ghosts and I loved every page!
Cassidy is able to see ghosts ever since her near death experience and can travel to the Veil, a world not of the living nor of the dead but a point between the two. Despite the oddity of her gifts, Cassidy is calm, bring and full of love and life. Not to mention her best friend, Jacob is a ghost and he was the one that saved her life. Jacob and Cassidy friendship was beyond heart stabbing-ly beautiful and I want to wrap them up and protect them.
They fit together well as friends and companions. Their joyful and sassy banter is delightful to read and a few of their sassy replies left a smile on my face. I truly love how Cass rents comics and sits there turning the pages for Jacob so he can read them. That. Is. Everything.
The plot was fascinating and you can see via the landmarks and their descriptions that Schwab poured a great deal of time into this middle grade read and the details help string this story together. Cass and Jacob begin their adventure when they follow Cass’ parents on a ghost hunting adventure and what they encounter isn’t as pleasant as it seems.
Literally, I couldn’t fault the writing, it was captivating and intriguing and caught me in a word filled box, desperately trying to find out what happens. There is a darkness to the tone which is links into to her previous novels.
There is no faults. It was a faultless book and I am drying to see where this series will lead.
