Dry, Neil Shusterman

Thank you Walker Books for this book in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

The drought—or the Tap-Out, as everyone calls it—has been going on for a while now. Everyone’s lives have become an endless list of don’ts: don’t water the lawn, don’t fill up your pool, don’t take long showers.

Until the taps run dry.

Suddenly, Alyssa’s quiet suburban street spirals into a warzone of desperation; neighbours and families turned against each other on the hunt for water. And when her parents don’t return and her life—and the life of her brother—is threatened, Alyssa has to make impossible choices if she’s going to survive.

Review:

We are literally killing the Earth.

I knew that this book would be amazing before I even started reading it. Why because Neal Shusterman is a literal genius and I adore his work!

Also Walker Books sent Dry with a bottle of water which I thought was cute at the time but after getting less than half way through the book did I realise how thirsty I was and I drank the whole thing. Literally you never appreciate water that much until you read this book and it is insane, you need to stay hydrated and you need water to survive.

Dry is an apocalyptic book where the stakes to find water and survive are high since water isn’t as easily accessible as it is today. You watch the struggle and the viscous need to find water consume the characters and it’s terrifying the lengths that they go to, yet so thrilling and realistic at the same time. Which is brilliant, I love it when characters struggle. Yes I know I am sadistic but hey nothing in life is fluffy and sweet all the time so why should it be any different for characters of a book?

There are a lot different POV in this book which at the start annoyed me but then I found myself desperate to read from the different characters POV, though it did take me a fair amount of time to enjoy the characters, compared to Scythe the characters just were as interesting straight away, it takes some time.

I also have to admit I was more interested in Kelton than Alyssa. Might be because of the creepy vide that Allyson got from him? Actually it is, creepy is just my thing. Kelton started awkward but than his darkness blossomed and I loved it and lived for it. On comparison to Alyssa, Kelton was more of a complex character while I found Alyssa to be rather boring… sorry not sorry.

Dry is literally one of those almost end of the world, desperation, fear and all the travelling, desperation and again all the FEAR, that I needed. It honestly hit all the marks for me and if it had a hand I would high five it for an outstanding job. Susterman has a way of bringing his work to life with how realistic the story is, the characters struggles are and the overall fear and questions that linger within you. Without a word of a lie, there will be times were you will stress over characters safety and the whole time you sit there reading, you will be desperate for water, I kid you not.

I don’t need to rattle on about how amazing Shusterman’s writing is because honestly this guy is a GOD. I don’t think there is anything that he can’t write about. Shusterman is a prime example of how YA books should be written. Hands down my favourite and yep this guy cannot do any wrong in my eyes. Like EVER.

Now do me a favour and go wonder the world in search of his work, you won’t be disappointed.
