Imprison the Sky, A.C. Gaughen

Thank you Bloomsbury for this book in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

Stolen from her family as a child, Aspasia has clawed her way up the ranks of Cyrus’s black market empire to captain her own trading vessel–and she risks it all every time she uses her powerful magic to free as many women, children, and Elementae from slavery as she can.

But Cyrus is close to uncovering her secrets–not only that Aspasia is an air Elementa with the ability to sail her ship through the sky, but that she is also searching for her lost family. And if Aspasia can’t find her younger siblings before Cyrus does, she will never be able to break free.

Armed with her loyal crew full of Elementae and a new recruit who controls an intriguing power, Aspasia finds herself in the center of a brewing war that spans every inch of the ocean, and her power alone may not be enough to save her friends, family, and freedom.

Review:

Last year Reign the Earth was the only book I was recommending people to read. It was divine, dark, mystical and just captured the little pieces of my heart. To hear that there was another book hitting the shelves following Reign the Earth was riveting.

No matter how amazing Imprison the Sky was, it just wasn’t Reign the Earth and a massive part of my soul is grateful for that.

Don’t get me wrong, there was absolutely nothing massively wrong with Imprison the Sky, I believed it to be amazing. Though if you were to compare it to Reign the Earth like I have and honestly couldn’t help doing, it just isn’t as fantastic even though completely wonderful at the same time. Is that making a whole lot of sense?

We follow Aspasia, a captain to a young yet lively crew and is 100% the badass you want, need and crave. Yet while this character is fierce and a character that a completely relate to, she wasn’t Shalia which in itself was disappointing, in more aspects than one.

With Aspasia, as brilliant as she was I couldn’t bring myself to be invested in her romance, couldn’t even spare a dime. It felt unnatural, and forced to me. I wanted her to be a single lass and pirate taking on the world!

I found myself highly invested in the characters that formed her young crew, I needed to know more about them and get drawn into the depths of their lives. Their vibrant and sassy conversations and comebacks was certainly a highlight of the book for me, and there was more than one occasion were I would read the comment out loud to those that would listen. There was an overwhelming amount of loyalty and support to one another, they always sought to protect each other and put the teams interest above their own, especially Aspasia.

What was pure joy was A.C’s pure talent. I don’t think there would be many people that wouldn’t be drawn into the depth of her work, with a smile on her face. A.C. is a game changer and a heart killer, her writing is that moving and it lingers in your mind, leaving you thirsty for more.

Like I mentioned earlier this book is great but it is just a smaller sister version to Reign the Earth. I possibly invested a lot of time and effort into Reign the Earth that I might have built up the expiations of the sequel. Which wouldn’t surprise me. I have killed my own buzz on more than one occasion when it comes to books.

Nevertheless, I believe that this book will still be highly entertaining and enjoyable for readers young and old. And let’s face it, we know book three is gonna kick some major ass!!
