Thank you Harlequin books for this book in exchange for an honest review
Synopsis:
Far, far away, in the realm of Enchantia, creatures of legend still exist, magic is the norm and fairy tales are real. Except, fairy tales aren’t based on myths and legends of the past—they are prophecies of the future.
Raised in the mortal realm, Everly Morrow has no idea she’s a real-life fairy-tale princess—until she manifests an ability to commune with mirrors.
Look. See… What will one peek hurt?
Soon, a horrifying truth is revealed. She is fated to be Snow White’s greatest enemy, the Evil Queen.
With powers beyond her imagination or control, Everly returns to the land of her birth. There, she meets Roth Charmaine, the supposed Prince Charming. Their attraction is undeniable, but their relationship is doomed. As the prophecy unfolds, Everly faces one betrayal after another, and giving in to her dark side proves more tempting every day. Can she resist, or will she become the queen—and villain—she was born to be?
Review:
The Evil Queen is the story of the creation of the Snow White villain, the Evil Queen. (if you didn’t get that from the title, hopefully that explanation helps)
Alright.
I didn’t love it but it didn’t really hate it either.
The overall dot point of the story was good. I thought the world building started off great for the first few chapters, it really eased you in. But then BAM it hits you, a great overload of information. Taken by surprise, you sit there trying to figure out what the hell was going on, where are we? What is this? Who put this here? Did someone bring popcorn? Honestly it was like eating a chilli, it starts of okay and then bang, you’re crying for a glass of milk. I need consistency with my world building, not a whole chapter of wham, bam, thank you ma’am. Well at least, in the book sense anyway.
Our main character Everly was a bit of a drainer. Ever been to a boring lecture? Yeah I think that Everly was the speaker, because her inner dialogue went on and on and on and on and on and on and I don’t wannnnnaaaa know. Just stab someone or make them eat a poison apple. Your overthinking has given me a brain freeze and not in the over excitement of getting an ice cream and eating it too fast kinda way.
Okay so the overall idea was really good though? And it has a pretty cover…?
What I really don’t like about this book is the dialogue. I mean it was like catching up with a whole bunch of hill billy’s that aren’t educated and trying to read for the dictionary. Imagine that right? Sitting round a fire, letting your brain get ‘dumb downed’ to get a gist of the lack of depth to the conversation and all of a sudden they start giving you expert life advice like a therapist. Except The Evil Queen’s dialogue was listening to a whole bunch of teenagers that only know little words and then you get taken back by the sudden sex scenes and references… Umm where did you come from? Did your mum tell you to wear protection? You are like 12?!?! Uttly confused over here. This was inconsistent.
It was a brilliant fantasy with great twists.
That I saw coming.
And why does everything have to be about love?? I mean. Can’t a male and a female chill out and have some pizza while watching b-grade horror movies? Why does there always have to be a love interest that is the cause of all the problems. Can’t she just be a bad bitch cause the barista forgot to make her sad vanilla soy latte? Love ruins things, and it got too lovey dovey… need a barf bad in isle 1.
Can I give it kudos for trying?
