Review:
The Shark Caller is one of those books that surprises you when you start to read it. I honestly wasn’t expecting much before reading this book but it barely took a few pages to change my mind. Based in Papua New Guinean, you meet Blue Wing and her guardian Siringen, the village’s shark caller. Siringen is skilled in the traditional and spiritual way of taming sharks. Blue Wing is desperate to also be a shark caller but for a separate reason – revenge.
The Shark Caller is absolutely stunning and covers a wide verity of topics that naturally occur in the human life. You have life and death, friendship, family and trust all wrapped up in one beautifully written tale that leaves you surprised.
You find out that this book is inspired by the author’s upbringing on the island of Papua New Guinea which is truly epic! Jumbled into the mix of the story a visiting professor and his daughter Maple arrive from the US and embody the westernisation that those that live on the island fear and Maple and Blue Wing have an instant dislike to one another. But as you would expect, overtime, they find that they have more in common than originally thought.
I loved the native setting of Papua New Guinea, it was refreshing and authentic. I also really loved the writing style, the characters and the dialogue. The whole book was pretty amazing and the fact that there were sharks involved – count me in!!
