Synopsis:
Summer love…gone so fast.
Will Tavares is the dream summer fling―he’s fun, affectionate, kind―but just when Ollie thinks he’s found his Happily Ever After, summer vacation ends and Will stops texting Ollie back. Now Ollie is one prince short of his fairy tale ending, and to complicate the fairy tale further, a family emergency sees Ollie uprooted and enrolled at a new school across the country. Which he minds a little less when he realizes it’s the same school Will goes to…except Ollie finds that the sweet, comfortably queer guy he knew from summer isn’t the same one attending Collinswood High. This Will is a class clown, closeted―and, to be honest, a bit of a jerk.
Ollie has no intention of pining after a guy who clearly isn’t ready for a relationship, especially since this new, bro-y jock version of Will seems to go from hot to cold every other week. But then Will starts “coincidentally” popping up in every area of Ollie’s life, from music class to the lunch table, and Ollie finds his resolve weakening.
The last time he gave Will his heart, Will handed it back to him trampled and battered. Ollie would have to be an idiot to trust him with it again.
Right? Right
Review:
This high school queer teen drama and romance novel is a must read. You get the sweetest characters in a Grease retelling!
Our two leading characters Ollie and Will met over summer on school break and had the summer romance of their lives! They think it’s a once off, they take in every moment of their summer romance, know that as soon as summer’s over, so is their summer fling.
Ollie’s family plans change so he ends up attending high-school where, low and behold, Will attends. Problem is that Will is living in the closet, no one at school knows or even suspects that Will is gay, after all he is a loud basketball jock that hangs around cocky friends.
While Only Mostly Devastated is a fun queer romance with moments that you find yourself laughing out loud to, it also hits home with some heavy topics.
- Ollie watched his Aunt deteriorate from cancer.
- Facing pressure from friends
- The fear of coming out
I loved the mix of touch life situations as well as everyday teen life. And for once it was great to read about a high-school book that actually featured high school situations. Honestly I’m over ‘high school’ books where the kids don’t even attend school but just sit around and be so self-involved that it kills me!!
Over all this was a great read and I would highly recommend picking it up, even if you aren’t the greatest contemporary fan like me.
