Synopsis:

For seventeen-year-old Fable, the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home she has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one, and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father, and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him, and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.

Review:

Before jumping into the review of Fable, we need to acknowledge of incredible Young is as a writer. She has a way of writing a compelling story with very few words that encourages your imagination to kick in and build this world. Young is the kind of writer that I inspire to be.

Now on Fable.
It was impressive.

I am currently living for these dark sea-based books that are exploding out of the woodwork and Fable is instantly at the top of the list. The dark elements of this book and beautiful without crossing into the territory of horror and freaking everyone out. A world full of traders on ships, murderous, death and sharp knives is the kind of world where you either drown and die or you fight to survive.

Fable refuses to give into the darkness of this world and proves that her life is valid and worth fighting for. Being a dredger, Fable is able to dive underwater for long periods of time and collect rare gems. In an attempt to prove her worth, Fable tangles up with the likes of pirates and joins the crew of The Marigold.

Dark. Pirates. Ruthless.

Need I say more?
