Synopsis:
Mattie can’t remember a time before she and William lived alone on a mountain together. She must never make him upset. But when Mattie discovers the mutilated body of a fox in the woods, she realizes that they’re not alone after all.
There’s something in the woods that wasn’t there before, something that makes strange cries in the night, something with sharp teeth and claws.
When three strangers appear on the mountaintop looking for the creature in the woods, Mattie knows their presence will anger William. Terrible things happen when William is angry
Review:
Going to start with the fact that I really want to meet Henry, she is fast becoming one of my favourite authors with her eerie, creepy style of writing and her vibrant imagination. With every new book, I find myself falling for her wicked styles more and more.
In Near the Bone we meet Mattie who is trapped on a mountain and trying to survive, with a faded memory, except the overwhelming urge to not make her husband upset. After stumbling across a mutilated carcass, Mattie and her husband soon realise that they are not alone in the forest…
What I love about Near the Bone, is the mystery of the monster. You are left unknowing for most of the book, allowing your imagination to really take over and run wild. You build the suspense and you build this idea of the monster in this book that will no doubt leave you uncomfortable and wonderfully satisfied at the same time.
