Kings of the Wyld, Nicholas Eames

Synopsis:

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

Review:

And here I thought I wouldn’t like another fantasy book after finishing Prince of Thorns…

This was fucking brilliant.

The characters were likable that I it was hard to pick a favourite. Actually I lie, Moog was bloody brilliant and at times I found myself laughing out loud at his antics. He was a bloody ripper!

Besides Moog the other characters were brilliant, amazing and well…. Is there a better word for fantastic? If so that’s them. They bounced off each other and their conversations were delightful, bitter and brimmed with all the smart ass comments you would expect to get from a band of brothers.

Kings of the Wyld is told from Clay Cooper’s perspective of the adventure of his band, the Saga, who were once notorious and mercenaries who would kill monsters with their eyes closed and a server hangover. Now they band gets back together to save one of the band member’s daughter, Bloody Rose. This adventure is one that would should surely bring about their dying breath.

I kid you not, this is one of my all-time favourite books and it came soooo close to knocking Prince of Thorns out of first place.

The dark humour, the tense moments, the highs and lows of emotion, intense action, loveable characters, it was all one big fun sized meal and damn it was enjoyable.
