Synopsis:

Post-apocalyptic Los Angeles is a city in chaos where humans and Supernaturals coexist in tentative peace. Newly recruited Special Agent Laila Eyvindr and her team at the Inter-Realm Security Agency (IRSA) respond to Supernatural related crimes within the city. But it’s a challenge for an Elf, like Laila, to keep the peace when humans are still suspicious of Supernaturals.

Amid this turmoil, Supernatural men are going missing at an alarming rate and rumors speak of a dark force emerging from other worlds. Laila starts digging for answers and suddenly finds herself in too deep. She must fight for her survival or face execution. Will she escape before time runs out or die trying? And can she trust the mysterious man trapped in the cell next to her?

Review:

This book gave me real Supernatural feels. Except Dean and Sam were girls and worked with the government instead of being rebels. I loved it.

Straight off the bat, this is one of the few fantasy book I have read with a mass involvement of different ‘races’ of mythical creatures and not all of them were perfect. Small thing I know but you look at how many different fantasy books that involve a mass variety of different races and it is ultimately a battle of who is the better race and who is the most powerful and blah blah blah, it’s pretty much a dick contest as I like to call it. And really it isn’t about the race its more about the individual characters.

If you are confused about what I’m talking about think of Lord of the Rings. You have a variety of different races that don’t spend the whole book or series talking about how important they are compared to others, but as individual characters they really try to prove themselves. Hence why LOTR is such a great book series. I could go on and name other fantasy books where this happens and where other fantasy books have failed but we don’t have the time nor the amount of coffee for that chat. But breaking it down. Caught by Demons wasn’t a dick contest. The characters, which are powerful in their own way prove themselves and it was brilliant to see.

Caught by Demons opens up a brand new world of fantasy that hasn’t been done before and is truly unique and captivating. Nothing better than fresh meat or something along those lines. While there are many realms which races of mythological creatures are from, they also live among humans as well. Based in Los Angeles after the ‘Event’ our elvish leading lady is an investigator looking into the disappearances of mythical creatures and what dark situations follow.

Laila is an elegant, bold and strong character that carries her heart on her sleeve and is aware of her flaws. Though being an elf, you would think that they are flawless and then you start dreaming about Legolas from LOTR but realistically, no character is without her flaws and while Laila has very few flaws you barely notice over her willingness to do good in the world. I did enjoy the friendly banter between Laila and her roommates Erin and Ali and I enjoyed their ‘human’ outings to a club instead of the typical elf preserving nature kind of image that gets put into your head, which makes them more relatable.

To be honest, I would have lived to hear and know more about ‘The Event’ and it is probably something that will be uncovered later on in the series but I’m nosey and I need to know everything. Personally for me the lack of detail around this event was a slight negative amongst all the positive aspects of this book.

Caught by Demons was also filled with some dark scenes, gritty humour, friendship and struggles and it draws you into this brilliantly created world. If you are after a captivating fantasy series that carries a few laughs then I would highly recommend reading Caught by Demons.
