Summoned by Demons, Kathryn Blanche

Thank you to the author for this book in exchange for an honest review

Synopsis:

It’s been nearly two months since the Inter-Realm Security Agency shut down an illegal Demon-run fight ring, and despite all efforts, the Demons are still at large. Special Agent Laila Eyvindr and her partner are called to investigate a series of ritualized murders where Demonic energy lingers in the air. However, someone’s destroying the crime scenes, the evidence going up in smoke. A mysterious and potentially dangerous stranger arrives on Laila’s doorstep with information about her roommate’s Dragon parentage, but Laila has bigger things to worry about than Dragons. Strange creatures attacking the city and clashing personalities in the office threaten to distract the team and leave Laila wondering who she can trust. When one of their own is taken, will Laila save them before they become the next victim?

Review:

And I thought Blanche blew me away with the first book. I was wrong. The second book was just as good as the first, which is saying something because usually the second book never really lives up to the expectation of the first. And don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a ‘nice’ review because the author sent me the book. This is, as they always are, an honest review.

I am still in love with the world building. There is so much detail delivered subtly that it seems like a world that you already know and understand. Usually world building of this depth comes at the start of the book in a whole chapter with a side of ‘head fuck’ which means you have no idea what’s going on because there was so much information delivered in one go. Blanche delivers you this world over the course of the book with consistency and I live for this. Honestly if you are writing and plan to build your whole world in the first chapter. Don’t!!! Do it gradually and take a leaf out of Blanche’s book to see how this is delivered. *cough* anyway, the urban dystopian/fantasy is everything you need.

Summoned by Demons picks up right where the first one finished and you dive straight into the story. Laila is the bad ass lead, and I live for her. Not only is she ready to get her hands dirty but she is also considerate and loving of those around her and takes everyday as it comes, no matter how stubborn she is.

I love the traditional way that these ‘creatures’ are written out. Call me old school as hell but I hate it when there are so many different ways that a vampire acts but realistically the tradition is the best. Let’s face it, vampires don’t fucking sparkle!

Honestly, Blanche is a captivating writer and me being a little bit of a nit-picker that I am, I compared her writing in both books. Though Blanche is very consistent I found the story line and dialogue more direct in the second book, Summoned by Demons and I am loving it.

Blanche you are a fantastic writer and I am encouraging you to please keep writing, you have a gift woman!!!!
