Heartstream, Tom Pollock

Thank you Walker Books for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Synopsis:

I just wanted to see you. Before the end. A taut psychological thriller about obsession, fame and betrayal, for fans of Black Mirror. Cat is in love. Always the sensible one, she can’t believe that she’s actually dating, not to mention dating a star. But the fandom can’t know. They would eat her alive. And first at the buffet would definitely be her best friend, Evie. Amy uses Heartstream, a social media app that allows others to feel your emotions. She broadcasted every moment of her mother’s degenerative illness, and her grief following her death. It’s the realest, rawest reality TV imaginable. But on the day of Amy’s mother’s funeral, Amy finds a strange woman in her kitchen. She’s rigged herself and the house with explosives – and she’s been waiting to talk to Amy for a long time. Who is she? A crazed fan? What does she want? Amy and Cat are about to discover how far true obsession can go.

Review:

We have a one sitter book over here. I couldn’t put it down as soon as I started. It was brilliant from start to finish and wow! I fricken loved it.

Heartstream has two POV’s that mix up the story. We have Cat, who is dating a pop star but keeping their relationship a secret. Then we have Amy, who is a popular ‘influencer’ that has thousands of followers on a social media app called Heartstream. After live streaming her mother’s funeral (WTF?) Amy comes home to find a strange fan in her house, with a bomb strapped to her chest.

While I have to admit that both stories were great, I found myself dying to get back to Amy’s POV as it was more intense and fast paced. Overall though both stories were brilliant.

To get to the dark yet serious note about this book, it makes you wonder about the harm of social media and the impact that it has on lives. It almost makes you question, the time and effort that you put into social media but also what you post on social media. (I mean besides bookstagram) It raises that fact that whatever you upload is online and there forever.

What can I say about Pollock’s writing style? It’s dark, it’s brilliant and damnnn he is becoming on of my favourite writers of all time.
