Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriarchal ancient kingdom, where a woman’s worth is tied to her purity, and she must bleed to prove it. But when Deka bleeds gold – the colour of impurity, of a demon – she faces a consequence worse than death. She is saved by a mysterious woman who tells Deka of her true nature: she is an Alaki, a near-immortal with exceptional gifts. The stranger offers her a choice: fight for the Emperor, with others just like her, or be destroyed…

Review:

Are we girls or are we demons?

Hell yeah this book was fricken epic!!!

We always talk about books that need to come with dark notes, with own voices and that touch heavy hearted subjects. This is that book. This is the book that everyone has been asking for and boy did it absolutely deliver!

While this is a fantasy book, I have to remind you that subjects in this book happen and still happen around the world today. So while you enjoy the beautiful book, listen to the hard hitting truth that it delivers as well!!!

Lets talk about a society that abuses women and young girls that starts with a ritual that cuts them. If you bleed read, you are pure. If you bleed gold you are impure and killed instantly, even though girls with gold blood are demons, they heal and they hardly die.

Deka is caught with gold blood, she was captured and killed repeatedly. Each time she healed and waited to be killed again. That was until she was freed by a stranger, who takes her to the capital where others just like her, train to defeat the Deathshrieks, the pale monsters that attack villages, steal the woman and kill the men.

This high hitting fantasy is one that you want on your shelves or in your hands. I legit loved this book!
